Donald Jackson, scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's Crown Office at the House of Lords and the artistic director of The Saint John's Bible, discusses fulfilling his life's dream and the process of bringing The Saint John's Bible to reality. Seating is limited.

Nature, the Devoted, and Art

Sacred stories have inspired artists across the centuries. Curator of European Art Dr. Tom Loughman considers the diverse motivations and forms of devotional imagery represented by works in the Museum's collection of European art, as well as those in current temporary exhibitions of New Mexican retablos and sacred manuscripts.

Join Michael Roswell of Roswell Bookbinding in Phoenix to learn how his company is binding full-size facsimile pages of The Saint John's Bible into the deluxe Heritage Edition book. Discover the process, challenges and opportunities presented by this significant project.

The Words of the Bible

Dr. Paul Wegner, professor of Old Testament at Phoenix Seminary, discusses the literary history of the Bible, its various translations and early printed history.

WORKSHOPS

From Inspiration to Reality: Tracing the Artistic Process

Thursdays, February 7, 21, March 6, 20 & April 3, 1pm – 3pm

This five-session workshop explores the artistic process from different points of view. Learn about the physical construction of works of art in various media, as well as the evolution of the status of the artist from artisans to free-thinkers to innovators. Visit Illuminated Manuscripts and Masterpiece Replayed to consider how artists’ ideas evolve and change. Finally, work with a professional art educator to bring an original work of art from inspiration to preparation to completion. This program for adults aged 50+ meets at both the ASU West campus and the Museum. Registration is limited.

The Name of the Rose

This 1986 film by Jean-Jacques Annaud, based on Umberto Eco’s book of the same name, stars Sean Connery as the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville and Christian Slater as his apprentice. The two investigate mysterious deaths at an abbey and explore its medieval library and manuscript collections as they pursue the killer. Runtime: 130 minutes.
